Taking a trip to Fish Lake Utah is something we look forward to every year. We always haul our trailer down and stay for a week, soak up the sun, play on the water and enjoy the quiet serenity. Camping at Fish Lake Utah is great and always packed with adventure and fun.

Fish Lake Utah Camping Trip

There are so many reasons why Fish Lake Utah is one of our favorite vacation spots. Aside from the beautiful scenery, active wildlife, and cool weather, you are never at a loss to catch a fish. There are spots where even my kids (as young as two) can catch fish non-stop all day long. It is really just really the perfect family destination for a vacation in Utah. I grew up spending some time each summer there, and we have continued that tradition on with our family. We go with my parents every summer and enjoy each minute of it.

There are three main campgrounds and then a few other campgrounds that are run by the Forrest service (Dr. Creek, Mackinaw, and Bower Creek, as well as others). On the north side of the lake, there is Bowery Haven Campground. In the middle (west) side is The Lodge, and on the southwestern side is Lakeside. We usually stay at Lakeside because we like how big their camping spots are. There is plenty of room for your RV so you don’t feel “squished”. This campground is a little bit further of a walk from the water. Bowery Haven and The Lodge are closer to the water, but not by much.

The Lodge at Fish Lake offers visitor information as well as cabins. Lake Side and Bowery Haven also have cabins in addition to the RV and tent camping.

There is an RV Park up on the left side, and cabins and other camping down on the right. The marina is in the middle. It is free to put in and take out, and a small fee if you want to doc your boat. If you want to stay at any of these campgrounds, or use the marinas, be sure to call ahead to make reservations because space fills up quickly. There is also some primitive camping on the north side of the lake, but I have never stayed in those campgrounds so I can’t tell you much about them.

Lake Side Campground Fish Lake Utah

As you can see there is not much shade at Lake Side campground, and there isn’t much as Bowery Haven, but Mackinaw campground has a lot of trees. I don’t mind the lack of trees because it provides a beautiful view of Fish Lake from our campsite. If you want to ride your ATV’s you will have to drive for several miles to get to the trails. You can’t unload the ATV’s in the campground areas, but you can have them on their trailers.

Even my 3-year-old had a great time catching fish!

We take the kids fishing for perch first thing to get their energy out. There are several places you can anchor closer to the shore (watch out for moss) and you can catch them a hundred a minute. This is a great way to teach your kids the basics of fishing because they will really be able to catch fish and fast. By the time we left, my 8-year-old was unhooking her own fish and putting her own worm on. My 6-year-old was trying to as well and did pretty good for the most part.

My first catch of the trip! I was so excited.

When you ready to stop fishing for Perch (and sometimes Chub) you can do any number of fishing for “the big boys” and get yourself some nice catches. I got this while trolling. I didn’t keep it but it was sure fun to reel in.

Beautiful Deer on the side of Fish Lake Utah

This is just one of the many Deer that we saw on the side of the lake while we were out fishing. They are so beautiful.

Sunset on Fish Lake Utah

This is just one of the sunsets that we got to watch while we were out fishing. It is just so beautiful there. I can’t even remember how many fish we caught all together but it was well over 100 in the 4 days we fished, plus all of the perch.

Tinfoil Dinner while camping

Another favorite of ours is “camping food” like dutch oven, tinfoil dinners, and roasting things on sticks. I also love the way breakfast taste right off of our Camp Chef . YUM! Just seems to taste better, lol.

To make a tinfoil dinner just take two large pieces of tinfoil and lay them in a + (plus sign layout). Then you will put your meat down. Cut up potatoes, onions, carrots, and whatever else you like to eat in there. Add a little seasoning and throw it on hot coals for about 20-30 minutes. Check it to see if everything is done (esp the meat) then eat up. You can even do this with the fish you catch!

Joe Bush at Fish Lake Utah

This is the famous Joe Bush! Be sure to stop by and say hi. There is also great fishing south of him on the lake.

Where is Utah?
Where is Utah?

Even if she wasn’t able to fish as much as the other kids, she enjoyed watching and had a great time.

Where is Utah?

My six year old couldn’t get enough (and neither could our other kids). They kept making up funny names for all the fish they caught and would try to keep count. It was just a lot of fun.

Where is Utah?

From high in the air to deep under the water there was always something to see. We also like to take a drive around and look at the Summer Homes and see all of the deer that like to bed down in the bushes and trees up by those homes.

Where is Utah?

This little guy was camped outside of my parents’ trailer, so my kids took some bread pieces out to him so we could watch him eat. They loved it! (I am sure that little chippy didn’t mind either 😉 ).

Where is Utah?

There is no doubt that we will be calling at the beginning of the year to once again make our reservations to go back a spend a week next summer. We love it at Fish Lake and I love passing that on to my kids who also look forward to it.

We also go to Fish Lake every summer. Nice pictures and review. Only thing you missed I think is talking about the places to eat. Both Bowery Haven and the Lodge (which just turned 80 last year) have a restaurant, the Bowery’s is the best by far… which is sad because the Lodge should be the star of the lake.

I have 4 videos showing all around Fish Lake on my YouTube channel ( channel name: 12Shilo12, link is above with my name here I think). The “2009-10” one shows the most, but each focuses on and shows something different or unique. Please check them out and leave comments on each.

Awesome pictures!! Makes me wish we had a camper cause a tent just won’t get it. Maybe a cabin? Looks like you had a great time.
