Celebrating the 4th of July doesn’t have to be expensive. Some of the best memories come from simple traditions, easy crafts, and fun activities you can do right at home with your family. Whether you’re planning a backyard BBQ, looking for kid‑friendly entertainment, or just want a few budget‑friendly ideas to make the day feel special, this list will help you put together a meaningful and affordable holiday. Take this Cheap 4th of July Ideas and Activities list and add your own as well! It is a great starting place.

Some of the best memories my kids have are of us doing simple things together to celebrate the holidays and even just regular days with intentional time together. It really is the simple things that will make the biggest impact. I also recommend learning about Independence Day and why it is important.

Cheap 4th of July Ideas and Activities

DIY Patriotic Star String Art

Cheap 4th of July Ideas and Activities

This is a simple, inexpensive craft that looks great as décor for the holiday.

Materials:

  • Wood board
  • Red, white, and blue acrylic paint
  • Nails
  • White string or embroidery thread
  • Star printable pattern
  • Tape
  • Hammer

Instructions: Paint your board with alternating red and white stripes and let it dry completely. Choose one of the star pattern printables below, tape it to the board, and hammer nails along the outline of the star. Once all the nails are in place, gently tear away the paper. Weave white string around the nails until you get the look you want, then tie it off to secure.

This makes a great porch decoration or centerpiece for your BBQ table.

Backyard Games That Cost Almost Nothing

You don’t need fancy equipment to keep everyone entertained.

Ideas:

  • Water balloon toss
  • Three‑legged race
  • DIY ring toss using bottles and rope
  • Sidewalk chalk obstacle course
  • Freeze tag or capture the flag

These are perfect for kids and adults and require little to no prep.

Host a Budget‑Friendly BBQ

  • Paper chain garlands
  • Upcycled tin‑can luminaries
  • DIY Spoon Chimes
  • Painted rocks for table décor

These are great for kids and can be done in under an hour.

Backyard Camping or Late‑Night Stargazing

Set up a tent in the backyard, roast marshmallows, and enjoy the warm summer night. After the fireworks, stargazing is a peaceful way to wind down.

You can use my printable scavenger hunt to make it even more fun: Scavenger Hunt (Free Printable)

Simple Patriotic Treats

Even if you’re saving your full dessert post for 6/30, you can still include a few easy ideas here:

  • Red, white, and blue fruit cups
  • Patriotic popcorn (white chocolate + sprinkles)
  • Ice cream sandwiches rolled in sprinkles
  • Berry shortcake

Start a New Family Tradition

Cheap 4th of July Ideas and Activities

Some of the best traditions cost nothing at all.

Ideas:

  • Share what you’re grateful for about living in the U.S.
  • Watch a patriotic movie
  • Write letters to missionaries, military members, or grandparents
  • Take a family photo in red, white, and blue
  • Make a time capsule to open next year

Watch Fireworks Without Spending Money

Instead of buying fireworks, find a spot where you can see your city’s show for free. Parks, school fields, and neighborhood hills are usually great viewing areas.

Bring blankets, snacks, and glow sticks for the kids.

End the Night With Sparklers or Glow Sticks

If you want something festive without spending much, sparklers are inexpensive and fun. Glow sticks are even cheaper and safer for younger kids.

I hope this list gives you a bunch of ideas to have a Cheap 4th of July! These Ideas and Activities can be spread out throughout the month so that you can do them all! It’s a great way to spend intentional time together.
