Scream 7 Parents Guide

I wrote this Scream 7 Parents Guide to help you know what is in the movie. All opinions are my own.

I have been so excited for this movie – especially with the return of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell). There will be some spoilers in my review at the end, so if you don’t want to know, then skip it.

The Good:

Neve Campbell (Sydney) and Isabel May (Tatum Evans) had good chemistry. Isabel played the perfect moody teenager. There were some nods to the original Scream – maybe a few too many, but that was okay. There were several jump scares; this one was pretty gory and involved a lot of deaths.

The Bad:

I wish that Patrick Dempsey had returned as Mark, but Joel McHale did okay. I believe it would have been better with Patrick. There were so many new characters introduced in the film, and I felt 5% connected to any of them. There wasn’t a great character arc, and it didn’t give you enough time to really get to know them, so it was like “eh” when any of them died.

I felt like it focused a lot on Sydney and Tatum’s relationship, which was okay. Though I think in reality, Sydney would not have shielded Tatum from everything, she would rather have taught her self-defense, how to handle a gun, how to use the safe room, and all sorts of other things because that meant being prepared. And Sydney was nothing, if not prepared.

I hated that some of the characters acted so naively. MAIN characters. We are in movie 7, and several of them have lived through this before, and here we are acting like we don’t know what’s gonna happen. It was a little annoying. I also felt like the discord between Sydney and Gale didn’t match the last few movies they were in together. It was off, and it made everything else seem weird.

The reintroduction of Mindy and Chad was exciting. And then it just fizzled because they didn’t utilize their characters at all. I felt like they had no real relevance to the movie, and I was confused about why they were even brought back. I was also upset that even though they got injured, they acted like they were down and out. I had beef with that.

The Ugly:

While there were some plot issues (as I mentioned earlier), nothing was as ugly as the killer reveal. It could have been great. Even the lack of tying what happened at the beginning of the movie to the rest of the story wasn’t as bad as the ending. I was actually disappointed.

SPOILERS:

Mark gets stabbed multiple times. This whole scene is just an eye roll for me. First of all, he knows better than to go where he went and not act cautiously. Secondly, if something happened to him, don’t you think, with all of the chaos happening, that he would be getting people checking in with him as the captain? And no one even notices???

The use of AI is beyond annoying. I wish that they had chosen a different path

Scream 7 is rated R for language. It runs for 1hr 58m.

There are no end-credit scenes for Scream 7.

It’s worth noting that the previews (at least at our theater) had language (F bombs) and a couple were VERY creepy/scary. It sets you up well for the movie, haha.

Sex & Nudity & Innuendos – 2/5 – Much like in the original, it shows a couple kissing, and then they lie down with the boy between the girl’s legs, and they start making out. It lasts about 15-25 seconds. Then it shows another couple making out in bed with the girl straddling the boy (prelude to sex).

I think they were trying to make it look like a “like mother like daughter” type of thing, but I didn’t like it in the first Scream – and it has been nice to mostly get away from that in most of the other movies. So I wish they had left it out.

Violence & Gore – 4/5 – It shows multiple stabbings (and not just regular OG style). These are more graphic and gruesome. It also shows someone being burned alive after being stabbed. One of the characters is lifted up and hung on a sharp handle, and it impales their head. Another character is lifted up and gets tangled in the strings and is gutted and cut up. There is a scene where a character is shot with a gun so many times that their face “falls” off (I actually found this comical).

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 3/5 – Shows underage drinking and adults drinking

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 4/5 – Even with all the plot holes, there are several good jump scares and intense scenes. The scene in the bar with the killer and the scene on the stage with the killer are both absolutely gruesome. And one main scene at the beginning and one at the end.

Other things to note – Don’t go in with high hopes of a great plot and a lot of character depth. It’s a surface scratcher at best and doesn’t end AT ALL well. The biggest highlight was having Sydney back, and even that fell flat for me.
