Wicked: For Good Parents Guide

I was able to screen Wicked: For Good in order to write this Wicked: For Good Parents Guide. All opinions are my own.

I have a lot of emotions running through me right now. Where the first Wicked movie was funny and lighthearted for the most part, Wicked: For Good is the opposite. It is very heavy and has a lot of emotion. If the first one isn’t fresh in your head, be sure to watch it before you go into the theater to watch the second one. They play right off of each other. There is a little bit of a time jump, but you will have to watch to figure out where. Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba are exactly what you expected, but even more. While the character depth started to show itself in the first movie, you get to see exactly how far it goes and what comes out the other side. I was also surprised by Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero and the difference in his character from this movie to this one.

If you haven’t read the book or watched the play, you will be in for a treat because, like me, you will have no idea where to story is going. I really enjoyed the different perspective, and it added in several of the same elements as the Wizard of Oz (1939) that most of us grew up watching. Get ready for a rollercoaster of emotions, especially between Glinda and Elphaba.

Overall, the movie was very enjoyable. It was a little slow for me, but that needed to happen to build the characters the right way and bring the story to the point it did. One thing that I absolutely loved is the closure. While there were a few loose ends that didn’t have answers, most of the questions were tied up nicely. I personally felt like they left it wide open for a third movie – and I am not sure if they will pursue this, but it would be great in my opinion, because all of the backstory stuff is out of the way and we can have another really good film.

Wicked: For Good is rated PG for action/violence, some suggestive material and thematic material. It runs for 2hr 17m.

A movie that is packed with emotion and great music. It brings so much more depth to the characters and a fantastic ending to the movies.

Sex & Nudity – 1/5

It shows a man and a woman kissing
A couple sings a song as a prelude to sleeping together. Nothing is shown but them kneeling on the bed, and they start kissing, then the scene cuts away.
It shows a couple sitting on a bed. The man is shirtless, and the woman is shown in a robe, tank top, and shorts.
Some of the dresses (especially Glinda) are low cut or show a little side boob.

Violence & Gore – 1/5

A little bit of hand-to-hand combat when the guards are beating a prisoner. Mostly cut scenes while another character is singing.
There are scenes where the guards are holding guns and pointing them at other characters.

Profanity – 1/5

Oz is used in place of God a few times
Shiz (instead of the “s” word)
Lord is used once

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 1/5

A character is shown drinking a couple of times

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 2/5

A character is taken away and beaten
The witch is killed
There are animals trapped in cages, and Elphaba releases them
Animals are being abused
Characters are killed, injured
There are mob-like scenes where the characters sing about killing the witch
A character is transformed and is angry

Wicked: For Good is the perfect second movie. I really enjoyed it.

She attempts to broker a conciliation between Elphaba and The Wizard, but those efforts will fail, driving Elphaba and Glinda only further apart. The aftershocks will transform Boq (Tony nominee Ethan Slater) and Fiyero forever, and threaten the safety of Elphaba’s sister, Nessarose (Marissa Bode), when a girl from Kansas comes crashing into all their lives.

As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, Glinda and Elphaba will need to come together one final time. With their singular friendship now the fulcrum of their futures, they will need to truly see each other, with honesty and empathy, if they are to change themselves, and all of Oz, for good.
