I was able to screen The Creator in order to write this The Creator Parents Guide. All opinions are my own.

The movie starts off with Joshua (played by John David Washington) and Maya (played by Gemma Chan) together. It is very quickly evident that she is pregnant. They are happy and enjoying each other and then things turn to crap in about 30 seconds. The movie spirals from here to 5 years later where it follows Joshua on his quest to find Nirmata (the creator) and answer.

Through the course of the movie, you will become attached to each of the main characters. It gives a good backstory and character development. Some you will like and some you won’t.

The Creator is a great AI sci-fi movie that puts a twist on other storylines that we are used to. Get ready for different. Other than being a little slow-going, the movie overall is pretty good. I give it a solid 7/10.

The Creator opens in theaters on September 29, 2023

The Creator Parents Guide

The Creator is rated PG-13 for some violence, some bloody images, and strong language. It runs for 2hr 13m.

There are no end-credit scenes for The Creator. When the credits start rolling, feel free to head out.

Sex & Nudity –  2/5 – It shows a couple lying down on a bed talking about their unborn baby, and touching the mother’s stomach. There is some affection. She is dressed in a thin tank and shorts. It shows a couple on the beach laughing and hugging. At one point, there is a scene where some guards are watching a holographic machine with stripper-style dancing from 2 different (I am assuming are) AI robots. Some of the clothing is immodest.

Violence & Gore – 3/5 – It is a war movie – so there are a lot of fighting scenes. It shows entire villages being bombed, and soldiers shooting and killing human and AI men, women, and children. A robot head is ripped off (but looks realistic). There is a giant machine that targets and destroys areas (people included).

Profanity – 3/5 – Several uses of dick, shit, GD, God, Jesus, bitch, ass, hell, damn. I counted three cutoff F words and one full. Close to 50 swears overall. Also talks about people “raping and murdering” – might bring up questions from your kids.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 1/5 – Background smoking and drinking. Nothing prominent.

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 2/5 – There is a scene where life support is turned off and another where a parent gets trapped. Both result in death. This could be triggering. There are also a lot of war scenes, people dying, and explosions, which could also be triggering. A parent and child are separated, it’s very traumatic.

The Creator is a fantastic sci-fi movie. The special effects are very well done. John David Washington did great (although I am not a huge fan – I feel like his acting is a little forced sometimes). The storyline and overall concept are great and, though it’s slow-moving, the movie overall is good.

For this one, I think 12 and older. If your kids are very sensitive to “war” then preview it first to see.
