How to organize a kids play room

I have four kids who love to play and very often argue when it is time to clean up. Not that they don’t (most of the time) but it is always a struggle because they feel like they are in a pile of quicksand. In other words – there is really no where to “put the toys away” and they feel like they are at a dead end road. I like having things fairly clean – I am not OCD about it, but really don’t like messes all over. You can tell by the picture above that I wasn’t happy at all and that my kids never really played with any of it because they didn’t know what was where. Today I want to share how to organize a kids play room.

How to organize a room – Kids Play Room

After a lot of thought and some research, I decided how I wanted it to look, and I started sketching out pictures, taking measurements and figuring out exactly what I would need to accomplish my goal of organizing the kids play room. There were so many kids play room ideas, that I had to really figure out what I wanted for functionality as well as still looking nice. Going into this I did indeed expect for it to be a lot of work – but holy cow did it take a lot more of my energy that I thought possible. First things first, we took and pushed everything to the side and out of the way. Then I got the shelving and installed that. Once the shelving was up, I laid the totes out how I wanted them and then started sorting toys and more toys and more toys until I have sworn off Christmas for the next 10 years! lol (no really…) It was all worth it though . . . are you ready to see how it turned out?
(drum roll * * * * * * )

Each tote is labeled with what is inside (almost all of them, still working on that) and they are sorted out with the toys for the younger kids on the bottom shelves and the toys for my older kids on the top shelves. They love to read so we left the bookcase and two shelves of books, but the bottom one is mostly school books for when I do preschool with my younger ones. It just looks so nice, I still can’t get over how amazing it looks.

Inside of the playroom, there is hardly anything – just a doll house and chair. Then we are getting ready to hand the sheet metal and line it with a wood border so the kids can have a magnet board in their play room as well. There are a few other things I am working on but so far I am very pleased with how it turned how. I am going to go top to bottom in our house and figure out the best way to update each room and how to organize a room without spending much. I just want a clean house that is organized and stylish. It will time and a lot of hard work, but we will get there.

What do you think?

Looks great! We have always had playrooms with the exception of the house we are in now. It is a must have room for our next house 🙂

Love the lights! The key is making sure the kids put stuff back!

That looks amazing! IT reminds me of the Bernstein bear’s messy room book!

That looks great! I love the colors you used and the little colorful lights around the border where the shelves are. My husband and I just cleaned up our kids playroom tonight and it looks so much better, but no where near as nice as yours! 🙂
