This post is brought to you by Roto-Rooter. All opinions are my own.
Buying a new home can be stressful, even though you are excited. Once you finally have the keys in your hands you are anxious to get moved in. Life is great, and things are going along, but you should always be prepared for when something happens. Every new homeowner needs to have certain items on hand to be able to handle problems when they arrive (which will increase exponentially if you also have kids living in the house :)) These items range from tools and cleaners to safety. It is great to learn this independence and be able to say that you solved the problem!

Here are 5 things that every homeowner needs:
1 – Tool Kit
You are going to encounter situations, many times over where you will need at least a screwdriver set, tape measure, stud finder, level, hammer, saw, drill—-the list could go on and one. This is a great excuse to head to your local tool store and pick up some tools. My husband and I each have our own set because we use them so much. Also be sure to get a bag or tool box to keep them in so you can stay organized as well.
2 – Cleaners
No doubt you will be doing basic cleaning regularly, but you also need to keep in mind products to use for deep cleaning or to help with issues like clogged drains when they arise. Roto-Rooter makes a few different kinds of clog remover that work great and will save you a lot on plumbing bills. You can’t call the landlord to come take care of the issues anymore, so this is a great inexpensive way to help fix a clogged drain. Other cleaners to keep on hand are dish soap, hand soap, floor cleaner, sanitizing wipes, bleach, laundry detergent and all-purpose cleaner. Oh year, don’t forget about the windows – so glass cleaner too.
3 – First Aid Kit
You will be doing a lot more hands on things like yard work, fixing up the house, or even for your kids – playing outside. You always want to keep a first aid kit on hand and keep it stocked so that wounds can be treated and bandaged right away. You will probably be playing doctor to the neighbor’s kids occasionally as well.
4 – Ladder
Owning a house requires all sorts of different jobs for the homeowner to perform. Things like cleaning the rain gutters and hanging Christmas lights, or getting into the attic. Even changing a light bulb may require the use of a ladder. Find a good one (I recommend a multi-position ladder) and keep it handy.
5 – Extention Cords
You will be amazed at how many things you need to plugin once you start hooking everything up. Spring for the power packs and surge protectors. They are more efficient and will help protect your electronics.

What things do you keep on hand as a home owner? There are so many things that we have found useful. This is just some of our top items. Roto-Rooter is one of our favorites. I will keep these things in mind. My hubby already had a home before we got married so I have no idea what else he bought to go with his new home.
When my husband bought his home, his first, his dad gave him many of these items and told him that he would need them. He was right about all of them. This list is spot on.
Awesome tips! I have my own toolkit and it is a complete one! It saves me money because I can do small repairs in my house instead of calling for a professional. The Roto Rooter is something we have in the house at all times.
Thanks for the new product to look up. We have a drain that likes to clog now and again.
I agree toolkit and cleaner set is a must to have for a new homeowner
I can never survive without my cleaners especially when we’re about to welcome Spring. It’s important to have all of these to make sure that you’re prepared.
It’s really important to have a tool kit and a good set of cleaners as well. I always make sure that I don’t lack any supplies in case anything happens.
Home is a great asset of a person where they start their lives. So its responsibility of their on to mark some points before owning the home. Great tips! Thanks for sharing.
Agree! Roto-Rooter is always good to have around the house. It is less expensive to address minor plumbing issues yourself than calling for a plumber.
