The Union Parents Guide

The Union is now playing on Netflix. I wrote this The Union Parents guide to help you know what is in the movie. All opinions are my own.

The Union follows blue-collar worker, Mike (Mark Wahlberg), who reunites with his former girlfriend Roxanne (Halle Berry) – who is also a member of The Union (a secret spy organization). She pulls him into a whirlwind adventure and he has a crash course in espionage. There are several twists and turns and some expected things. Overall the movie was pretty good.

I give it a 7.5/10. A couple points off for the language and the nudity (see notes below). It wasn’t cheesy, which I appreciated, and the action was good. I would look at this more as a date night movie for spouses, or more mature audiences. There are a lot of sexual references and innuendos as well. So even with the PG-13 rating, I probably still won’t let any of my kids under 16 watch.

The Union Parents Guide

The Union is rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, suggestive material and some strong language It runs for 2hr 13m.

There are no end-credit scenes for The Union, so no need to watch the credits.

Sex & Nudity –  2/5 -shows part of Mike’s (Mark Wahlberg) bottom when he is showering. A man is taken hostage in his boxer shorts. A bare bottom is shown on a facetime call. One man makes a reference to “drain the hog”, insinuating he is going pee. Another reference to “fingers in your anus” during a psychological exam. Several references to sex, and one conversation about sex. A conversation about using a broom closet in 8th grade…

Violence & Gore – 2/5 – There is a lot of fighting and shooting. Knife being stabbed completely through a leg(blood shown). Multiple times a neck is broken (and it is shown). Snipers taking out people. There isn’t any blood shown. A lot of hand to hand combat and gunfire.

Profanity – 3/5 –

  • 42 + uses of shit.
  • 16+ uses of ass (asshole).
  • 5+ uses of bitch.
  • 10+ uses of hell.
  • 20+ uses of God, GD, Jesus, Christ, OMG
  • 1 full use of F bomb and a WTF in a text line it shows.
  • 5+ uses of damn

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 2/5 – Beer is shown several times being consumed. Hard liquor is also shown being consumed. Most of it is in bars or at a wedding reception.

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 1/5 – While this is an action movie, I didn’t really feel at anytime super tense or frightened. So I would say it flows well, and might be a little predictable, but it was good.

The Union is a fun watch for date night. You will have some laughs and enjoy a good action flick that is relatively clean.
