On the morning of our second day, before continuing our road trip toward New Mexico, we stopped at one of the most iconic Route 66 landmarks: Standin’ on the Corner in Winslow, Arizona. We had stayed the night in Winslow after a full first day exploring the Glen Canyon Dam Overlook and walking the Lava Flow Trail at Sunset Crater, so visiting the corner first thing in the morning gave us perfect light, cooler temperatures, and the whole place almost to ourselves.
Standin’ on the Corner is one of those classic Americana stops that feels both nostalgic and fun. The town has fully embraced the famous Eagles lyric, turning this small intersection into a charming plaza filled with photo opportunities. The bronze statue of a man with a guitar is the centerpiece, and the mural behind him features the girl in the flatbed Ford, making it easy to recreate the moment from the song. Standin’ on the Corner – Route 66 (Winslow, AZ)
One of the best parts of this stop is how interactive it is. You can walk right up to the statue, pose under the Route 66 shield painted on the pavement, or stand in front of the mural for a classic Route 66 snapshot. There’s also a real vintage red flatbed Ford parked nearby, which adds another layer of charm and makes for a great backdrop. Kids and teens especially love climbing up next to the truck or lining up under the street signs for fun, candid pictures.
Across the street, small shops sell Route 66 souvenirs, local art, and cold drinks. Even early in the day, the area feels welcoming and relaxed. Parking is easy, and everything is within a few steps, making it a quick but memorable stop before getting back on the road.
Standin’ on the Corner is simple, iconic, and full of personality. Visiting in the morning gave us the chance to see it without a lot of other people there, and we got to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. It ended up being one of our favorite Route 66 moments. It’s the perfect way to start a travel day and a great addition to any Arizona road trip.
