Moana 2 picks up 3 years after the first one. There are several noticeable differences in this movie like Moana having a little sister. It showcases Pua and Hei Hei a lot more, and it introduces new characters that add a lot of great flavor. You get to know Maui even better as he is prominent in this movie throughout, and it shows Moana with her new crew learning how to work together and think outside the box.
While Moana learned a lot and grew in the first movie, you can see other trials and growing happening here, and her being old enough to understand better the sacrifices and challenges that she’s really facing and the consequences of them as well.
Overall I feel like the movie storyline is great. It’s original and fun and adds a lot to the Moana timeline. The music was a little different. I feel like maybe they tried to have her seem more grown up with the music and the way she sang but it was a little hit-and-miss for me, and the same with Maui. But overall it was enjoyable. There are some sentimental notes like Moana and Maui, as well as Moana and Simea (her little sister).
Overall I think your family will enjoy watching it and its a great addition to the Moana film series. STAY for the credits! There is a mid-credit scene that adds so much! (once that is done you can head out). I love how the left it wide open for another great Moana film to follow – and I am excited to see where they take it.
