I don’t have a story!
We never participate, but our subdivision is pretty competitive with their yards, flowers, and decorations. We keep up our yard and house but could careless impressing the neighbor’s.
When I was in school some kids were in constant competition with each other and who had the newest or best things. It was exhausting.
My daughter and I have grooved on thrift stores since forever. When she was little, she was telling the neighbors how she got her favorite outfit at one of our “special stores.” The mother looked down at her, but she didn’t care.
I don’t think the Joneses wanted to keep us with us!
I never really tried to keep up with the others…more focused on my own family.

Bit a story exactly like that. I do have neighbors with expensive cars and my car is older. One of them asked me when I was getting a new one. I guess my old car is dragging down the neighborhood. 😉
