Life has a way of getting busy—between work, family, church callings, school schedules, sports, and the never-ending to-do list, it can feel overwhelming. In these hectic seasons, it’s easy to let spiritual habits slide. But it’s during the busiest times that spiritual balance matters most. It helps us stay closer to our Savior, Jesus Christ, and feel his love and strength when we need it.
As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we’re taught that drawing closer to the Savior anchors us no matter what season of life we’re in. Here are a few simple, meaningful ways to stay spiritually balanced—even when your calendar is full.
1. Begin and End the Day with Prayer
Prayer is more than a habit—it’s a lifeline. Starting and ending the day with sincere prayer invites the Spirit into our hearts and homes. Even if it’s just a short prayer in the morning and a quiet moment of gratitude at night, it creates a spiritual rhythm. If it’s been a while since you prayed, just remember that it is like talking to a friend. Pour out your heart with sincerity. God is there and loves you.
“Pray always, that ye may come off conqueror; yea, that ye may conquer Satan, and that ye may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.” — Doctrine and Covenants 10:5
If needed, you can set a reminder on your phone or place a note by your bed to help you remember.
2. Keep Daily Scripture Study Simple but Consistent
You don’t have to spend an hour each morning in study to feel connected to God’s word. Even a few verses can bring peace and direction when approached with real intent.
- Read a chapter from the Book of Mormon each day
- Listen to the scriptures in the car or while folding laundry
- Highlight one verse that stands out and ponder it throughout the day
President Russell M. Nelson has taught that daily immersion in the scriptures will “change your attitudes and behaviors.” Consistency matters more than perfection.
3. Protect the Sabbath
When life gets busy, weekends often fill up fast. But the Sabbath is meant to be a spiritual anchor, not just another busy day.
- Attend sacrament meeting and worship with your ward family
- Keep the day centered on the Savior—rest from worldly things
- Spend quiet time as a family or in personal reflection
By intentionally protecting your Sabbath, the rest of your week becomes more focused and peaceful.
4. Simplify and Prioritize
Not everything on your calendar is equally important. When your schedule becomes packed, ask yourself: What matters most eternally?
- Choose spiritual nourishment over endless busyness
- Don’t be afraid to say no to good things in order to make room for better things
- Simplify your family’s routines to create space for the Spirit
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf once reminded us: “We would do well to slow down a little, focus on the significant, lift up our eyes, and truly see the things that matter most.”
5. Involve the Savior in the Details of Your Life
Spiritual balance isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection. As you invite the Savior into your daily routines, He will help you find peace and strength, even in busy seasons.
- Offer quick prayers during the day
- Ask for guidance before making decisions
- Trust that your efforts, even if small, are enough
Remember: Christ understands the weight of your responsibilities. He can help you carry them.
6. Create Spiritual Habits as a Family
Busy seasons often affect the whole household. Instead of letting busyness pull everyone apart, use it as a chance to grow closer to the Lord together.
- Have short, meaningful family scripture study
- Pray together as a family morning and night
- Make family home evening simple and consistent
These shared spiritual habits strengthen family bonds and help children build faith—even when life feels rushed.
7. Give Yourself Grace
Finally, remember that Heavenly Father sees your heart. Spiritual balance doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly—it means turning to Him in faith and doing your best.
If you miss a day of scripture study or your prayers are short, don’t give up. Just begin again. The Lord honors consistent effort and sincere desire.
Finding Peace in the Middle of the Chaos
Busy seasons will come and go, but the peace that comes from staying close to Jesus Christ is constant. By focusing on simple spiritual habits—prayer, scripture study, Sabbath worship, and family devotion—you can keep your life centered on what matters most.
As you seek balance with the Savior’s help, you’ll find that He can bring calm to even the busiest of days.
