I love plants. For as long as I can remember I have had plants in my space. Some are harder to grow than others, and part of that is because sufficient lighting can be hard to get for most plants – especially if you have pets and you can utilize window sills, etc. So, I have recently become interested in grow lights for houseplants – and I wanted to share what I have learned so far in this houseplant grow light guide.

I am using grow lights for my indoor plants as well as my indoor greenhouse that I got last year. I am excited to see the difference in the plants. Not only have I shared several tips about buying grow lights for indoor plants, but I have also linked some of my favorites at the bottom.

Houseplant grow light guide:

  1. Understand Your Plants’ Needs:
    • Different plants have different light requirements. Understand the light intensity, duration, and spectrum needed for the specific plants you have. There are so many different kinds of plants, I couldn’t list them all here.
  2. Choose the Right Type of Grow Light:
    • There are various types of grow lights available, including fluorescent, LED, and high-intensity discharge (HID) lights. LED lights are popular for indoor gardening due to their energy efficiency and adjustable spectrum. We have linked a variety of these below.
  3. Consider Light Spectrum:
    • Plants require different light spectrums during different growth stages. Look for grow lights with a spectrum that includes both blue and red wavelengths for optimal growth.
    • There are full spectrum lights that contain multiple colors in varying degrees. Here are what the colors do:
      • Blue light helps produce chlorophyll and encourages germination and root development.
      • Red light regulates plant growth and helps produce flowers and fruit.
  4. Check Light Intensity:
    • Light intensity is crucial for plant growth. Different plants have different intensity requirements. Ensure that the grow light you choose provides the right intensity for your plants.
  5. Determine Coverage Area:
    • Know the size of the area you want to cover with grow lights. Different lights have different coverage areas, so choose one that suits your indoor garden size.
  6. Adjustable Height and Position:
    • Opt for grow lights that are adjustable in height. This allows you to maintain the right distance between the light source and plants as they grow. You can also get hanging grow lights.
  7. Use Timers for Consistent Lighting:
    • Plants require a consistent light cycle. Set up timers to ensure your plants receive the right amount of light each day, simulating natural day-night cycles.
  8. Monitor Temperature:
    • Some grow lights can generate heat. Ensure that the temperature around your plants remains within the optimal range. Proper ventilation can help dissipate excess heat.
  9. Be Mindful of Energy Efficiency:
    • LED lights are energy-efficient and cost-effective over the long term. Consider the energy consumption and lifespan of the grow lights before making a purchase.
  10. Rotate Plants Regularly:
    • To ensure even growth, rotate your plants regularly so that each side receives adequate light exposure.
  11. Start with Seedlings:
    • If you’re growing plants from seeds, consider starting with a lower light intensity and gradually increasing it as the plants grow.
  12. Follow Manufacturer Recommendations:
    • Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and guidelines for the specific grow lights you are using.

By following these tips, you can create an optimal environment for your indoor plants using grow lights. Also, be sure to research your plant and find out about how much water you need (set a time to water regularly), fertilizer, how often to change the soil/pot, propagation, etc. There are a lot of elements to growing healthy happy houseplants, but with a little time and practice – you can be an expert.
