I was able to screen Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in order to write this Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Parents Guide. All opinions are my own.

My family loves Ghostbusters movies. We have watched them since the 80s. My kids grew up with them. And we have loved watching the new movies as they’ve come out. Ghostbusters Afterlife is freaking hilarious and has a great storyline. This set the bar high for any films coming after it. On that note, I wasn’t sure what to expect.

The trailers for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire looked good and made us laugh. So, going in, we were really excited to see it. The movie in and of itself is great. It has a lot of backstory. It is a little slow in some parts, but it’s building up some of the character development. It has a lot of nods (Easter eggs) to the original movies. So if you haven’t seen those, then you probably won’t catch a lot of them. So definitely watch at least the first one and maybe the first 2 original movies to see and recognize a lot of those.

There is a lot of humor in the movie…but unfortunately, a lot of the humor is crude. It talks about things such as nipple pictures, sex dungeons, “devil’s testicle”, “dickless” and “got some action” as well as other phrases. So just be aware that if you are taking younger kids, they’re probably going to ask you what those things mean. So if you’re not ready for that conversation, you might want to skip taking your children to this movie, or at least preview it first to see if it’s something you are comfortable with your kids watching.

Paul Rudd, as always, is a big part of the comedy and he is mostly clean. Also, a new addition, Kumail Nanjiani who plays Nadeem Razmaadi, is perfect and he is hilarious. I would love to see him brought in as a regular going forward in the series.

There was not a lot of language but enough that it is not kid-friendly. I wouldn’t recommend it for a little because there are a ton of jump scares, which would probably freak some of them out. This movie does show a lot of ghosts, demons, creatures, etc and most of them are pretty creepy. So just be mindful of all those things if you plan on taking your children to watch it in theaters.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is rated PG-13 for supernatural action/violence, language, and suggestive references. It runs for 1hr 55m.

There is one mid-credit scene (about 1-2 mins in) for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. When the main credits start rolling, you can head out.

Sex & Nudity – 2/5 – It shows several skimpy swimsuits, including a closer-up view of a woman’s backside with a barely covered behind. There are a lot of crude innuendos. I didn’t write them all down but here are a bunch: “got some action”, something about marshmallows mating, devil’s testicle, nipple picture (which it also shows – it is quick but you could still tell if you are looking), talks about a sex dungeon and then asks if a sex dungeon would have chains, someone being called dickless, a comment of someone being called tall, dark, and horny.

Violence & Gore – 2/5 – There is some fighting – like the proton packs being used to shoot at the ghosts. It talks about a girl burning to death in a fire and how she died before her face melted off. There are several scenes with the little stay-puffed marshmallow creatures – they are usually crazy and do a lot of things that would be considered self-harm (like burning yourself with a cig lighter, putting an arm in a grinder, etc).

Profanity – 2/5 – 5+ uses of Ass, 4+ uses of Hell, 1+ use of damn, 1+ use of shit, 1+ use of SOB, and 5+ uses of God. A few uses of God also being referred to as a deity.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking – 1/5 – Peter (Bill Murray) finds an old bottle of liquor and asks if anyone wants some courage.

Frightening & Intense Scenes – 3/5 – Shows people who have been frozen (pretty disturbing) and then they explode. It shows several ghosts and creatures that are pretty freaky. There is a story about an ancient fight scene and it talks about how they ripped the horns off of a creature. There is a normal female ghost in who then turns into a terrifying creepy-looking ghost and chases them. Just a lot of similar things to this.
