The movie starts out pretty normal (like before the monsters came) – but it doesn’t take long for the story to kick in. Prepare yourself for a LOT of jump scares. There are plenty of visuals (like blood everywhere) but it doesn’t show people actually getting injured/killed – just taken. There is a lot of screaming and terror – and also a lot of silence. They show the creatures a lot more in this movie – up close and personal.
I will say that if your kids have seen the first two movies – this one is not any more intense or scary. If you haven’t seen any of the A Quiet Place movies yet – WATCH THE FIRST TWO before you watch this one. It will give you a really good idea of what you will be getting into – and what to expect. If you don’t want to – just be prepared for a lot of jump scares. I would recommend 10 and older for this – and that’s with the assumption that they are accustomed to a little bit of scary movies/horror – if not – the recommended age is 13.
Here are the good and the bad:
POSITIVES:
They did a great job of making a good horror movie: the blood, and intense scenes with scares and chases.
I LOVED the cat.
The actors did an incredible job in their respective roles. It was interesting to see what happened from someone else’s perspective.
We now know how the people on the island knew that the aliens couldn’t swim because it talks about that – as well as showing Henri.
The special effects were really incredible. The CGI of the aliens was well done and lifelike. You felt like you were in the moment. Everyone was REALLY QUIET during the movie because no one wanted to get snatched haha.
NEGATIVES:
I felt like they didn’t give us any more information about the creatures than we already had. At the beginning of A Quiet Place: Part II we see a similar scene, things falling from the sky, where the town is attacked by the aliens. They then start wreaking havoc on everything.
I wish they had taken a little time to show SOMETHING about them coming, and ideas of where they came from. (Greenland, Independence Day, etc – do a good job of wrapping a little extra info in without making it a central focal point).
While I enjoyed Lupita Nyong’o (who plays Samira) she did absolutely amazing – and her cat, and the introduction of Joseph Quinn (who plays Eric) I didn’t really understand the point of showing them – or their stories such as they were.
I would have liked to see more of Djimon Hounsou who plays Henri. We are introduced to him in Part II, and I was looking forward to seeing him and his story – which wasn’t in this AT ALL.
I felt like a lot of the scenes were similar, but that is expected with this kind of storyline. Don’t make a sound or you will have to run – but sometimes they just nab you – it’s a little tricky (and leaves to debate why the timing is different).
I would have also loved some “cut scenes” where it flashes back to these characters’ lives before. Where it explains a little about why they are the way they are and shows us glimpses of them instead of some sad scenes that didn’t quite pull on my heartstrings.
Overall I give the movie an 8/10 – I was entertained. I had a great time and was thoroughly jump-scared many times. I felt like the storyline could have been stronger in a lot of ways. The movie did add some fun elements that added to the A Quiet Place timeline. It is definitely worth the watch in theaters. This would be a fun one for D-Box.
