Halloween Chocolate Decorations for Cupcakes

I am loving the kitchen in my new house, so we are doing a lot more baking and cooking and creating. Today, my daughter kept asking if we could make “bat cupcakes” so I said sure. We mixed up a batch of chocolate cupcakes together and while they were cooling we had fun making Halloween Chocolate Decorations for them. We make a Pumpkin, Ghost, Witch Hat, Bat Wings, Mummy, Spider, Tombstone, Cat and a Zombie Face. Fall decorations are so fun to make, so we decided we wanted to make Halloween Chocolate decorations that we could eat!

I used my silicone baking mats to put the chocolate on, and let them cool completely (even sticking them in the freezer for about an hour) and then we made a batch of Buttercream Frosting to decorate them with. We split our batch of frosting and dyed half of it black and the other half orange. We wanted to do purple and green as well, and will try that next time. I love the Wilton Gel Icing Colors because it only take a little bit and the colors always turn out awesome!

We put the frosting into two different pastry bags and frosted the cupcakes. We got a great decorating kit that came with 24 stainless steel tips, 3 reusable silicon bags and a storage case. I love it!) Once you have the frosting on the cupcakes, you will lift the edge of the silicone mat and bend it backward, making the chocolate “pop” off – kind of like you are peeling a sticker from a sheet. Since they are thin, they stick into the cupcakes/frosting easily and don’t tip.

We added the candy eyes to the bat, cat, and the zombie face and I love LOVE love how they turned out! My kids had friends over and it was all I could do to keep them from eating all of the chocolate decorations, lol. I let them each make a cupcake and decorate it and they had a lot of fun.

To make the chocolate decorations, you are going to need:

• 2-3 silicone baking mats (depending on how many you are making)
• Decorating Kit with pastry bag and tips if you want to use this to make your shapes
• Glass measuring cup or bowl that is microwave safe to melt the chocolate in
• Dipping Chocolate
• Spoon
• Candy Eyes
• Sprinkles (Green and Oranges or other preferred colors)
• Food coloring (if using white chocolate and want different colors)

Put the dipping chocolate into the glass dish and melt in the microwave for 30 seconds. Take it out and stir it with the spoon until smooth (if not quite melted, put back in for another 10 seconds). Once it is melted you can put it into the silicone pastry bag, or just use a spoon. I used a spoon for most of mine and think it worked pretty good. We used orange and green crystal sprinkles for coloring and the candy eyes on the mummies. If you feel like you don’t want to “free hand” the design, you can print out some coloring book pages and put them under the mats and trace them. Make sure you put the sprinkles/eyes, etc on RIGHT AWAY because almost as soon as you start designing with the chocolate, it starts to cool and won’t be sticky any more.

This was a lot of fun and only took a couple of hours. It was well worth it and would be great for a party or other activity, or just fun with your kids.
