I recently received Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening to try. Before this, all I had ever used was Crisco, because honestly, that’s what they had at Sam’s Club for the best price. We used the Organic Palm Shortening to make Chocolate Chip Cookies and they turned out fabulous. The constancy of the shortening was a lot different than that of Crisco; it was a lot creamier like fresh churned butter. I LOVED how easy it was to scoop out of the bucket. Because it was fresh and creamy, it was VERY EASY to put into the measuring cup and get the accurate amount without “squishing” and smearing it everywhere. I think it is a little more “effective” (does the job better) and so not as much is needed as traditional shortenings, so I will probably use less (just by a small amount) in my recipes next time. But even with the recipe followed as it was, the cookies still turned out great. The taste and texture of the cookies was noticeably different than those we had previously made with Crisco, and it was a good thing. I liked them better and so did my family. It was also nice to know that the ingredients that we had used were better for us. I also loved the packaging it came in. It is a nice heavy duty bucket that seals tightly with a carry handle. Tropical Traditions Organic Palm Shortening has earned its spot on my shelf!
Palm shortening is derived from palm oil. In its natural state, palm oil is a mixture of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, with most of the unsaturated fat being monounsaturated fat. Palm shortening is palm oil that has some of its unsaturated fats removed, giving it a very firm texture, and high melting point. The melting point of our Organic Palm Shortening is 97 degrees F., making it very shelf stable. It is NOT hydrogenised, and contains NO trans fats! It is great for deep-fat frying and baking, and is not prone to rancidity. Since it has been separated from some of the unsaturated portion of the oil, it is colorless and odorless, and will not affect the taste of foods like Virgin Palm Oil does.
