Doing laundry isn’t something that I despise – but it is not my favorite chore either. Regardless of how you feel about it, laundry can be expensive. Especially when you have a big family as I do. These laundry hacks have saved us a lot of money over the last year.
One thing I have gotten sick of buying is dryer sheets and fabric softener. I used fabric softener and I think it did great at keeping the fabrics soft. Dryer sheets work so well at getting rid of static and keeping it at bay. I needed an alternative that would be reusable and affordable and that is when I discovered wool dryer balls!

Stop using dryer sheets
Wool dryer balls are made of 100% Premium New Zealand Sheep Wool. That means they are reusable for thousands of loads and they are eco-friendly.
The wool dryer balls can be used with essential oils. You can scent them so they give it off as they are drying your laundry. You can use any essential oils. Just put a few dabs on each ball once a week to keep your laundry smelling fresh. The balls also help to keep it static free.
Lavender Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil, Frankincense Essential Oil, Orange Essential Oil are all great! I also love this 6 pack variety of oils as well!
You can get the Dryer Balls for a great price on Amazon. I paid under $20 for 6 balls. This is a great deal because they last for a long time. And they do a great job at drying your laundry faster too.

Change your washing settings
Changing the wash settings it another thing we like to do to cut down on cost. I run most of our loads on light soil instead of normal wash. This cuts the wash time down. This helps a lot when I have a busy day. The laundry is still just as clean.
Check to see if your machine has the option for water level. Be sure to choose the one according to the size you are washing. If it doesn’t always make sure you are washing a FULL load so you are not wasting resources.
Hang your clothes up to dry
This is something that has been done since the beginning of time because it is easy and it’s free. Hanging your clothes up to dry isn’t as convenient now as it once was. But, with a little work, you can have a nice place in your yard where you can hang your clothes.
Making a clothesline or buying one will cost a little at first. The money you will save on running your dryer should make up for it quickly.
Look for good deals on detergent
Finding great deals on laundry detergent and fabric softener (if you still want to use it) isn’t hard. I like to shop at stores like Smith’s (Kroger) because they have great sells all the time on laundry supplies.
I also shop at clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club to get good deals. Buying in bulk also saves money. With the dryer balls, you don’t have to use fabric softener anymore.
Essential oils are great because they give your clothes that clean smell. Dryer sheets or fabric softener provide this, but dryer balls do it for a fraction of the cost.
Use natural enhancers
Stains, smells, discoloration, and several other things are huge factors. You can resolve a lot of these by using natural enhancers when you are washing your clothes. Vinegar and baking soda are great to treat stains as well as remove smells.
You can also use bleach when doing your whites to keep them looking fresh. Just be careful not to follow with a load of dark colors. I actually like to do a load of our older towels after to make sure there is no bleach left.
